A morning roundup of what the local and national media have to say about the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, January 8, 2013.

A morning roundup of what the local and national media have to say about the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, January 8, 2013.

All reports, rumors and conjecture are a reflection of the media conversation and are not endorsed or confirmed by the Washington Redskins.

--A look at what will entice the new head coach of the Washington Redskins heading into the 2014 season. Running back Alfred Morris is a great example of a player that a new coach can build an offense around as Morris rushed for more than 1,200 yards this season and finished fourth in the NFL in rushing.

--One writer answers questions submitted by Redskins fans including his opinions on why owner Daniel Snyder’s success as a business man hasn’t translated to consistent success with the Redskins.

--The Redskins signed eight players this week on futures contracts including wide receiver David Gettis. Gettis played with quarterback Robert Griffin III at Baylor and was a sixth round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

--Former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon comments on quarterback Robert Griffin III and how he is being treated in Washington. Gannon said, “I think you’ve got to reel RGIII in, in Washington. He took major steps back in a lot of areas last year.”

--Quarterback Robert Griffin III won the Ed Block Courage Award on Tuesday. The award is voted by members of the Redskins team and is given annually to a player who “displays extraordinary courage in the face of adversity.”

--Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden reportedly may be a favorite for the Redskins head coaching position due to his experience with the remaining members of the Redskins staff. Gruden has worked with general manager Bruce Allen, defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and secondary coach Raheem Morris.

--A look at the potential candidates for the Redskins head coaching position and the likelihood coaches would leave their current positions to come to Washington. Vanderbilt’s head coach James Franklin is reportedly considered a long shot by some because of the vacancy at Penn State.

--A detailed overview of Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell’s coaching resume. Bevell hasn’t been a head coach of a football team at any level but it is his work with third round pick, quarterback Russell Wilson that has made him a head coaching candidate.

--Why sources say Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott is being considered for the head coaching position in Washington and a look at his coaching resume. McDermott has over 13 years of NFL coaching experience and his work with the Panthers defense in his 4-3 defensive scheme has produced the most sacks in the NFL this season with 60.

--One reporter contemplates if the Redskins will try to make another ‘big name’ hire this offseason. Names like Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden who are both analysts for TV networks as well as college coaches like Bob Stoops of Oklahoma or Kevin Sumlin of Texas A&M.

--Five Redskins whose roster spots may not be guaranteed for next season, including offensive lineman Maurice Hurt who spent all of last season on the PUP list.

--Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s thoughts on the head coaching interview process. Zimmer said, “If I get offered one of these jobs and I don’t feel good about it, you know me--I’m going to do what I think is best.”

--Former Indianapolis Colts general manager Bill Polian understands Redskins general manager Bruce Allen’s approach to hiring a new head coach. Polian said, “This is the Al Davis approach to coaching hires: spread the net as far as you can, pick the brain of as many people as you can.”

--How the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office can have an impact on the Redskins including their trademark registration for its team name.
