Should Redskins Trade Back From No. 34?

Posted Feb 27, 2014

Washington Redskins GM Bruce Allen stated his preference to add the bulk of the team's new talent this offseason through the draft, but will they need more picks?

As part of what is becoming an annual tradition, NFL draft experts are declaring the 2014 Draft Class to be one of deepest in years.

Washington Redskins general manager Bruce Allen feels confident the team can add NFL-level talent on all three days of the draft.

"There are opportunities in every draft," he said at the Combine. "We got fortunate getting [running back] Alfred Morris in the sixth round.

"There’s going to be some good players that go in the sixth and seventh rounds this year, I just hope we’re the ones that find those guys."

This is good news for a Redskins team that struggled in a number of areas in 2013, but will be without the No. 2 overall pick in the draft.

Instead, they will seek to add top talent with their first pick at No. 34. That is, unless they elect to trade back for more picks.

"Well you wish you have 12 picks right now, and if you had that first [round pick], you would trade that just to get more picks," Allen said bluntly.

"We see a lot of players in this draft right now that we would like to add to our football team, and it’s not that one player again that we’re looking for.

"We’re going to add maybe 20 to 25 new players to our football team and we’d like the bulk of that to come from the draft."

Either way, the end goal is to augment the talent already in place on this roster and help turn the Redskins into a consistent championship contender.

That will require a coordinated effort by the scouts, front office and coaching staff.

“It’s the Redskins. It’s really has nothing to do with any individual," Allen explained. "We had a poor season last year. Our job is to get better today.

"As a group we have to get better. It’s not just about one person."
