Gibbs: Winning Division Title ‘A Huge Deal’

Posted May 16, 2013

Redskins legend Joe Gibbs was at the team facility yesterday for his Youth For Tomorrow luncheon and spoke with Redskins.comTV about Robert Griffin III and the success of the 2012 team.

Wednesday’s luncheon benefitting Joe Gibbs’s Youth For Tomorrow foundation featured three NFL coaches with a combined nine Super Bowl victories.

In addition to Coach Gibbs’s three Redskins titles, current head coach Mike Shanahan won two titles as a head coach in Denver and one as the offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers.

They were also joined by former Chicago Bears head coach Mike Ditka, who won a title each as a player, assistant coach and head coach.

While the focus was centered around Gibbs’s 24-year commitment to his youth charity foundation, there was still time for football discussion, as Joe Gibbs marveled at the Redskins’ 2012 season.

“I think right now, Robert [Griffin III] and these guys winning the division last year, that to me is a huge deal,” he told Redskins Nation host Larry Michael. “You’ve got to have a great quarterback.”

The Redskins went to the playoffs last season for the first time since 2007, the last year of Gibbs’s second tenure as head coach in Washington.

Despite juggling other business ventures, including his NASCAR team and book promotion tours, Gibbs was on hand to watch the Redskins beat the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys to win the NFC East.

“I was there for all the games down the stretch, and Mike [Shanahan] will be the first to tell you, you’ve got to have someone under center that can get the job done,” he said. “We’d like to think it’s our coaching, but I can tell you right now, it’s not.”

Gibbs spoke with humility, but he remains the only coach in NFL history to win three titles with three different starting quarterbacks.

Perhaps more impressively, Gibbs found his title-winning quarterbacks in the Canadian Football League (Joe Theismann), the United States Football League (Doug Williams), and the sixth round of the NFL draft (Mark Rypien).

“You don’t get it done with three different quarterbacks, and Coach Gibbs is the first one to do that,” head coach Mike Shanahan said. “That’s an unbelievable task. But [Gibbs is] absolutely right, you’ve got to have a quarterback and we all know you’ve got to have a great supporting cast.

“I thought it was a great year for Robert [Griffin III] and what he was able to accomplish as a rookie, and it’s a great start for our organization. Hopefully we’re headed in the right direction.”
